Make sure that your career goals align with your planned educational level, and that your potential income will enable you to pay for your education

4. What sections should your resume have?
Contact info
Name, address, phone number,
Education

Regents Diploma expected June 2016
Experience
Paid or volunteer jobs you have held, including service jobs in the school
Activities
Any afterschool teams/clubs you participated in or hobbies you have
Awards
Perfect attendance, academic awards, etc.
Any courses you took or skills you have that are relevant to the job you are seeking (ex: language, computer)

5. Remember Do not lie on your resume Do not use a template
If you do not have something relevant to put into a category, remove that category from you resume (ex: you cannot have a listing for “Awards” that is just left blank on your resume)

6. Summary section
As you advance in your career, you might want to include a summary section (that is titled something that relates to the career you have)
When you have only had a few jobs, which were short in duration, a summary section is not necessary
Do not list a skill in your summary that is not supported by evidence in your resume

7. Target your resume: Include keywords from the job posting
Remember, your resume will likely be reviewed by a computer program before a person looks at it– if it does not align with the posting, it will be discarded
A person will spend approximately 6 seconds reviewing your resume, so make sure yours is relevant and stands out (in a good way) from the resumes of other applicants

8. Updating your resume
You should update your resume continuously so that it accurately reflects your progress in your career
Until you have 5+ years of experience in your career post-graduation, your resume should be one page
Make sure you edit your resume for the field you are in, and the job posting you are applying to

9. Resume Tips: Format Use an easy-to-read font
Stay between 10 pt. and 12 pt. font. Your name can be larger than 12 pt.
Be consistent– if you write out a month, write it out for all dates; if one section title is bold, all section titles should be bold
Use white space appropriately
Ideal page margins are .75” all around, and no smaller than 0.5”
make sure you have adequate space between sections
Put some information on the right so that the reader’s eye will scan all the way across the page, and make sure it all lines up visually (using tab, not the space bar)

10. Resume Tips: Content Make sure your email address is professional
Your resume should read in reverse chronological order, from most recent title to oldest
Proofread carefully for mistakes
Use action words
Don’t say you are a hard worker– explain what you have done that shows that you work hard
Use keywords from the job posting/ your field
Be specific
Instead of “worked with children” say “Developed three daily activities for preschool-age children and prepared them for a 10-minute holiday program performance.”
Focus on the impact of your work and your accomplishments, not on your job duties
