Eastern Lowlands Inland: Mountains and Valleys Large landowners dominated government and society They maintained an allegiance to the Church of England and had closer social ties to Britain than did those in the other colonies. society was characterized by small subsistence farmers, hunters, and traders of Scots-Irish and English descent. In my opinion, it is because of their religion to Like Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism is, historically, a liturgical religious tradition, meaning that great emphasis is placed on observing a formal devotional regimen—the celebration of saints’ days and other holy days, the performance of elaborate, dramatic ceremonies, the conduct of worship by reciting set prayers—all accompanied by sublime organ music and choral singing and led by priests wearing vestments. IT is like this because the southern colonies still followed the church of england for religion, where in the new england colonies they were puritans, and middle multiple religions, also large landowners dominated the society, which means theuy were rich in england as well. Social Structure: based on family status and the ownership of land

5 Political Life Southern colonies maintained stronger ties with Britain

6 Indentured Servants and Slaves
Cheap Labor on a Large Scale? The development of a slavery-based agricultural economy in the Southern colonies eventually led to conflict between the North and South and the American Civil War.

7 Other Colonies English in the American colonies and Spanish in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America = violence with the American Indians. The Indians lost their traditional territories and fell victim to diseases carried from Europe. By contrast, French exploration of Canada did not lead to large-scale immigration from France, and relations with native peoples were generally more cooperative.
