1 Welcome to JHS!! Pick up three index cards. Fold one into a triangle and write your name in big letters. Choose a seat, any seat. On one index card write 1-2 sentences about why you think we should study Biology (science trivia – example 1: cells). HOMEWORK TONIGHT !! Add to your initial thoughts on why study Biology (1-3 sentences) Science trivia – example 2: horseshoe crab. CLASS DISCUSSION! Add to your thoughts on why study Biology (1-3 sentences) Check out the science trivia website. Read about the largest single cell. Have students decide if they believe it or not. If possible, set up the video microscope and show them a cheek cell. Have them discuss briefly whether they think the site is true/reliable. Then show wiki answers and the conflicting information. Assignment tonight is to discover if the largest single cell really is an ostrich egg. Then have students add to their statement about why we should study biololgy. Show blue crab trivia; ask if they believe it. Show blue crab info and video. Have brief class discussion on student impressions – how is the blue crab important? Is there any harm to the crab? What concepts of biology are being used to study the blue crab? Have students again add to their statements. Ask students to share what they have learned.

5 Business…… Biology Syllabus Late policy Electronics Policy Questions?
Read, SIGN, and return last page. KEEP the rest of the syllabus in your binder. Due this FRIDAY – 9 September Late policy No credit for late work without a “coupon”. No extra credit if assignments are missing. Electronics Policy What is it? NO second chances. If your phone is in your pocket, and your hand is in that pocket, you will forfeit your phone. Questions?

6 Business…… Safety Rule #1 NON-NEGOTIABLE! No Food or Drink in class.
Why not? State laboratory safety laws Exceptions? Tables will have been disinfected Questions? Explain why Dr. G missed school

7 What are the Class Expectations?
Late Work policy? Assignments/ Make up policy? Tardy/Absence policy? Plagiarism policy? LWSD Grading? Science Notebooks? Hand out syllabus. Students read & sign. Verbally quiz after reading. Stickers for volunteers!

8 How to Succeed in Biology by Trying
Be Prepared Participate Practice Good Citizenship ***Part of your grade is based on your progress toward mastery of these qualities***

9 Two Truths and a Dream (on index card)
I raised pigs in 4-H I have published science fiction stories I have been skydiving

10 Short Quiz – with a neighbor
1. What is the longest bone in the body? 2. What is botany? 3. How long does it take for the earth to make a complete orbit around the sun? 4. How many legs does a spider have? How many legs does an insect have? 5. What scientist is associated with the equation E = mc2? 6. What is the scientific name for a human? 7. Where does a panda bear live? 8. What is the molecular formula for water? 9. What are the colors of the rainbow? 10. Name all of the planets in the solar system, starting with the one closest to the sun. *Tiebreaker question: What is the current population of the world (or the U.S), be specific. Closest guess wins the tie. (use a popclock to find the answer to this one).

11 Wrap-Up and Homework GET YOUR SYLLABUS SIGNED (YOU AND YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIAN) Research: What is the largest single cell? Bring your answer tomorrow and also the source of your information. Have a lab journal by this FRIDAY!!!

12 Right Away!! (7 Sept.) Take a Lab Check #1 score sheet from the table
Take a seat Take out your name card (or make one if this is your first day) Take out your “Why Study Biology?” card. List three things in your life that are important to you on this card.

13 REMEMBER!! MUST TURN IN SIGNED SYLLABUS BY FRIDAY
MUST WRITE RESULTS OF YOUR RESEARCH ON LARGEST SINGLE CELL, INCLUDING YOUR SOURCE INFORMATION, ON THE BACK OF YOUR SIGNED SYLLABUS MUST HAVE A COMPOSITION LAB NOTEBOOK BY FRIDAY.

14 Working EFFICIENTLY in Teams
With your next door neighbor: Identify 4 roles that are important for team success. For each role, write a sentence describing what that role is responsible for doing. Whip around!

15 Forming Teams Different roles suit different personalities.
One technique for determining personal strengths is the Meyers-Briggs system. Four categories with two choices for each: Extravert/Introvert Sensor/Intuitive Thinker/Feeler Judger/Perceiver Which do you identify with? Write them on your name card. If you feel you align STRONGLY with a description, underline that choice.

16 Extravert or Introvert? Which are YOU?
Extraverts often: Introverts often: Are self-contained and reserved Listen more than talk Think quietly inside my head Think, then act Prefer to work “behind the scenes” Have good powers of concentration Are outgoing and enthusiastic Talk more than listen Think out loud Act, then think Prefer a public role Can be easily distracted

17 Sensor or Intuitive: What kind of information do you naturally notice and remember?
Sensors often: Intuitives often: Notice anything new and different Are inventive – see what could be Trust their gut instincts Prefer to learn new skills Like to figure out things for themselves Notice details and remember facts Are pragmatic – see what is Trust actual experience Like to use established skills Like step-by-step instructions

18 Thinker or Feeler: How do you make decisions or come to conclusions?
Thinkers often: Feelers often: Are most convinced by rational arguments Are honest and direct Value honesty and fairness Tend to see flaws Are motivated by achievement Argue or debate issues for fun Are most convinced by how the feel Are diplomatic and tactful Value harmony and compassion Are quick to compliment others Are motivated by appreciation Avoid arguments and conflicts

19 Judger or Perceiver: What kind of environment makes you most comfortable?
Judgers often: Perceivers often: Make most decisions pretty easily Are serious and conventional Pay attention to time and are prompt See the need for most rules Like to make plans and stick with plans Find comfort in schedules May have difficulty making decisions Are playful and unconventional Are less aware of time & run late Question the need for many rules Like to keep plans flexible Want the freedom to be spontaneous

20 4 Corners! Intuitive (Back Door) Feeler (Greenhouse)
Thinker or Judger (Sink) Extrovert or Sensor (Front Door)

21 Which role suits your strengths?
Checker: Intuitive Recorder: Extrovert or Sensor Praiser: Feeler Taskmaster: Thinker or Judger Do we have the same number of people in each corner? Did anyone qualify for only ONE role?

22 Choose your teams! How many do we need?
Taskmasters: Choose a table – You will need space for 4 Checker: Make sure your team members suit their roles. Praiser: Ask everyone to introduce themselves Recorder: At end of class, clip together name cards. Taskmaster sits first. Checkers choose a taskmaster they want to work with. Praisers choose a pair to work with. Recorders get to choose a team with no surprises.

23 Sit with your new Team!! This will be your team for the quarter (some fine tuning may happen in the next few weeks) Sit together On the sheet of paper clearly write all team member’s names under your team name (look for the symbol in the corner of the tables). Turn this in to me. Take a minute to get the names and contact info of your teammates. Your teammates will be the ones to contact first if you miss a day and have questions about what we did.

24 Your Roles: Take description of your role to paste in your lab book
Recorders: Make sure all team members are getting important data and/or record information for group Praisers: Is everyone getting an opportunity to contribute? If not, try assigning questions to specific individuals. Taskmaster: Check over your earlier work – does it look correct? Is your group on task? Are they following the correct procedure? Checker: If your team gets stuck ask another group or Ms. R a question. Review earlier work to ensure quality.

25 Biology 9/8 Sit with your new team. Signed Syllabus
If you have it turn it in to your class period’s box. Did you make sure to answer the largest cell research question? Take out a sheet of paper and write your name and class period on the upper right corner. Write a 5-8 sentence paragraph discussing the following questions: How do scientists know what they know? What is involved in the process of DOING science?

26 Discussion: How do scientists know what they know?
What is involved in the process of DOING science?

27 Goal: Discuss and characterize observations.
Write down 5 characteristics that make up a “good” observation.

28 Practice making observations:
As I walk around, write down as many observations as you can…

29 Types of Observations:
Qualitative Examples? Quantitative Qualities Quantities

30 Put a BOX around your QUANTITATIVE observations.
Circle your QUALITATIVE observations. What do you think: Is one type of observation more useful than the other to scientists? Explain your reasoning.
