Purposes: Defend country from enemies Promote welfare of citizens Insure order and peace

4 CHECKS AND BALANCES Examples:
Legislative branch approving/denying judge appointments Supreme Court declaring laws passed by Congress Unconstitutional Presidential veto Senate approving Supreme Court justice Judicial Review-(Courts determine constitutionality of laws)

5 PARLIAMENTARY GOVERNMENT
Executive branch can be forced from office for failing to win legislature’s support on a major issue

6 FULL FAITH AND CREDIT CLAUSE
States must honor legality of other state’s civil laws

7 NECESSARY AND PROPER CLAUSE
Allow Congress to pass any laws needed to carry out any expressed power

8 DUE PROCESS CLAUSE State and National Government will govern without interfering with constitutional rights of individuals

9 NOTABLE AMENDMENTS 25th- Vice President takes over is President is disables 13th-Forbids slavery and most forms of involuntary servitude 4th- Forbids unreasonable searches and seizures 6th-Speedy and fair trial to try accused with undue delay and avoid secret trials

14 TEXAS V. JOHNSON Burning of American flag is a form of symbolic speech and therefore protected by Constitution
