3 What is a rationale? “A set of reasons or a logical basis for a course of action or belief.” Source Google So a research rationale will be what? Class discussion to define a research rationale

4 Why do you need a rationale?
To help develop an understanding of what needs to be done and how it will be done. To help identify any issues with areas of research- i.e lack of information, access to information issues. To be able to set SMART aims and objectives. To consider what resources are required and the availability of these resources.

5 “I`m going to research drug use in Columbia”
Possible issues? Class discussion around the difficulty of gaining accurate information on Columbia and the reasons behind this. Class discussion about the internet restrictions in educational institutions and impacts of this.

6 What would good look like?

7 Structure of a typical rationale
What will you do? How will you do it? What resources will you need? Why have you chosen to do it this way? What will the data look like? How will this help you? Note any ethical limitations you feel necessary.

8 Linking to the criteria
Take a look at the IP assessment criteria, where do you think a rationale will contribute? Think, Pair, Share task connecting the IP criteria to the rationale: LO2 (could also include LO1, LO3, LO4, LO5)

9 Progress check What are the risks of NOT completing a rationale before you undertake a piece of research? If I don’t do a rationale my aims and objectives will lack structure and detail Research may lack planning and foresight to identify problems Class discussion to look at how a rationale can help with each of these issues Ethical issues wont be addressed and so you will do something illegal
