5 Government New Jersey New York Type of Government: Royal Colony
Functions: NJ’s Government was split between East and West providing Religious freedom for the Quakers, and their own Governments Democracy Role: Protected Religious Rights, and also fewer restrictions, allowing people to grow the cities there and become more diverse. New York Type of Government: Charter Government Functions: Provides Free Rights for the English and Dutch, along with Religious Rights Democracy role: Constitution of NY prescribes the distribution of power among the branches of NY’s government

New York Population (1664): 4,936 Demographics: English, Dutch, French, Swedish, Scottish, Irish, German, Polish, Bohemian,and Italian Why Did they Come?: Religious Freedoms and New Start for life In the 1700s the Population would be well into the 100,000s New Jersey Population (1664): Estimated at 1,000 Demographics: Relatively same to NY; English, Dutch, French, Swedish, Scottish, Irish, German, Polish, Bohemian, and Italian Why Did they Come?:Quakers Carteret and Berkeley would set up wider religious freedoms and lower land costs NJ’s Population would increase, but at a lower rate than NY

8 Culture Women worked in the home. Very limited legal rights.
Children had household chores Families who could not afford to send their kids to school, would not.
