1 Parents, Friends and Families Welcome & Thank You!
ESTYN VISIT & REPORT JANUARY 2019

2 FULL REPORT AVAILABLE AT…
Report was published online on March 12th and a full copy can be accessed: (or search Estyn inspection reports, then Oystermouth Primary School) Or there is a copy on the school website

3 THINGS TO CELEBRATE There are 5 areas of the school that are inspected and every area had many positive comments: Standards ‘Most pupils listen attentively, express themselves clearly and use a wide range of vocabulary for their age...develop strong reading skills…write well for a variety of purposes…continue to make good progress in developing mathematical skills’ Well-being & Attitudes to learning ‘Nearly all pupils show high levels of respect and concern for others…They are very supportive of each other.’ Teaching and Learning experiences ‘Working relationships between staff and pupils are strong...teachers have good subject knowledge and link their lessons well to with pupils’ previous learning.’

4 THINGS TO CELEBRATE Care, Support and Guidance
‘Staff know the pupils extremely well and provide a nurturing environment that builds pupils’ confidence and self-esteem.’ ‘Within a short period of time the acting head teacher has established strong working relationships with parents. As a result, parents and members of the community feel that they are an important part of the school an support it enthusiastically.’ Parent Support 120 parent questionnaires (unheard of!) Attendance at the meeting was overwhelming. Comments were very positive across a range of areas and people felt the school was now ‘an exciting place to be’

5 THINGS TO CELEBRATE

6 THINGS TO CELEBRATE Leadership and Management
‘The acting head has a clear vision for the school and communicates well. She leads by example and receives strong support from staff, governors, parents and pupils. She is committed to driving forward improvements in the school.’ ‘Staff have leadership roles that match their strengths, expertise and interests’ ‘Governors have managed a long period of uncertainty in leadership well. They are very committed and supportive of the school’ Parent Support In the parent questionnaire 98% are happy with the current management and running of the school

7 OUTCOMES

8 OUTCOMES Excellent: Sustained performance
As you can see from the overwhelming positive comments throughout the report the school is doing a fantastic job educating and caring for our young people However, due to the temporary nature of the leadership team and positions within the school, the grading criteria restricts the school from accessing the ‘Excellent’ band in all areas due to the inability to sustain performance. Comments throughout the report testify to this restriction: ‘Overall it is too soon to see the full effect of the new initiatives and strategies’ ‘The new leadership team has put in place appropriate plans for improvement, but they have had little time to make a substantial impact’ ‘Current staff targets link better to school improvement priorities, but they have had little time to make an impact on improving standards and the quality of provision.’

15 LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
As a Governing body we wanted to take this opportunity publically, to not only congratulate all staff, parents, friends and families for what we believe to be a superb inspection report but to show our support and total confidence in the leadership and management of Oystermouth School at ALL levels. Some of us have been luckily enough to be governors of the school for 9 years+ and can categorically assure you that the school’s capacity to improve and the implementation of plans and strategies to move the school forward has never been greater.

16 LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
It might be worth noting at this point that many of the positions of leadership that are currently in place have been taken on with no additional payment or time and we thank the staff concerned for their hard work and willingness to carry out these roles in these difficult financial times. Caroline Morgan has taken on the role of acting head teacher without a deputy head teacher for the whole academic year and this has put an enormous amount of work and responsibility on her shoulders. The whole staff have supported her in this role and again as governors we would like to publically thank them for all their efforts this year.

17 LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
However we acknowledge that the temporary nature of the leadership team has to be finalised. It was always our intention as a Governing body, with support from our Challenge Advisor and Swansea Council to have a permanent head teacher in place and all subsequent roles and responsibilities finalised before September 2019. This process has already started: Head teacher advert went ‘live’ nationally on Monday 18th March (it is a legal requirement that any head and deputy teacher role is advertised nationally) Deadline for applications is April 5th Shortlisting will take place on April 10th (any candidate has to have the NPQH Head teachers’ qualification to be considered) Interviews will take place on April 30th offsite at Bishop Gore School Any subsequent roles and responsibilities will be decided following the appointment of the new Head teacher.

18 THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT.
ALL GOVERNORS WHO ARE PRESENT HERE TONIGHT HAVE NAME BADGES ON. IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS THEN PLEASE COME AND HAVE A CHAT. THANK YOU!
