1 Observation vs. Inference
Homework: Workshets due TOMORROW! – Two sheets, DOUBLE SIDED!

2 Earth Science How do we study these? Geology Astronomy Meteorology
Earth Resources & Processes Oceanography Space Weather Rocks Climate Oceans Minerals How do we study these? (how do we gather and Process information?) Tectonics Use your senses to gather information. We use instruments to aid our senses. used to make Observation Inference (a guess based on observations)

3 Aim 3: How can we distinguish the difference between an observation and an inference?
Jumpstart : Record five events that you observe in your daily life 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

4 What is an observation? An observation is when scientists use their five senses to gather information Example: That rock has a glassy texture

5 What is an inference? An inference is when scientists make an educated guess BASED on observations. Example: Since the rock has a glassy texture, it was probably made right outside of a volcano

6 Turn and Talk! Turn and talk with your neighbor to: .Create two sentences where scientists made observations about an important event AND IN THE SAME SENTENCE: What inferences did they make? Example: The scientists observed water on Mars, therefore they inferred that life could exist there!

7 Tracks like these are common in parts of the Southwestern United States
Tracks like these are common in parts of New England and in the southwestern United States. What do you OBSERVE from the following picture? What do you INFER from the following picture?
