Draw and annotate a picture of the heart. Fill in types of blood vessels table C- B Explain what the pulse rate is and what blood pressure measurement tells us. Answer questions on slide 28 A-A* Analyse the correlation between lifestyle affects the risk of heart disease Keywords Ventricle Atrium Artery Vein Capillary Starter: Why do we need a heart? Explain your answer.

2 13.2 The circulatory system
Topic overview • The circulatory system: - double circulation - the heart - blood vessels - the blood

3 The heart = a muscular organ that pumps blood around the body
through repeated rhythmic contractions We need blood circulation to • move glucose and other nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones and urea to and from cells • help fight disease • help stabilise body temperature How often does your heart beat?

4 The structure of the heart
You have 5 minutes to copy the diagram. Think of a way in which to remember the names of the different structures. The structure of the heart aorta pulmonary artery pulmonary vein valves left atrium vena cava right atrium Add arrows, colour code to show which are oxygenated blood and which are deoxygenated left ventricle right ventricle cardiac muscle thicker on left

5 The structure of the heart
to body and head to the lungs from the lungs blood from body + head oxygenated blood deoxygenated blood

6 The double circulation
lungs pulmonary artery pulmonary vein heart vena cava aorta body

7 The double circulation
Our circulatory system has two transport systems: • one transports blood from heart to lungs and back to exchange O2 and CO2 with air • one transports blood from heart to body and back to exchange O2 and CO2 with body cells lungs heart body

8 Questions… Do all arteries carry oxygenated blood? Can you give an example? Which side of the heart is the thickest and why? What is the function of the heart valves? Why is the human circulatory system often described as being a double circulatory system? What is the advantage of such a sytem?

9 A real heart…

10 Types of blood vessels- Fill this in
vessel type artery vein capillary Picture Direction of blood flow Blood pressure Function

11 MID-LESSON PROGRESS CHECK
Heart and Pulse MID-LESSON PROGRESS CHECK Swap work with the person next to you. Are they on track to meet their target? Level Objective Outcome D Describe the structure and function of the heart and blood vessels Complete dissection. Draw and annotate a picture of the heart. Fill in types of blood vessels table C- B Explain what the pulse rate is and what blood pressure measurement tells us. Answer questions on slide 28 A-A* Analyse the correlation between lifestyle affects the risk of heart disease 11

12 Blood pressure HIGH pressure HIGH pressure How are arteries
adapted for high pressure? pulmonary artery pulmonary vein HIGH pressure LOW pressure vena cava aorta LOW pressure HIGH pressure

13 Fit and healthy? A normal pulse rate for a healthy adult, while resting, can range from 60 to 100 beats per minute (BPM), although well conditioned athletes may have a healthy pulse rate lower than 60 BPM.

14 Radial Pulse Brachial pulse Carotid pulse

15 Keeping your heart healthy
What factors contribute to an increased risk of heart disease? In what ways can you reduce your risk of developing heart disease? What is coronary heart disease? Use the information on pages to help you.

16 of arteries contribute
Some questions… What does pulse rate measure? What units do we use to measure heart rate? How can you measure heart rate through the skin? Why does narrowing of arteries contribute to increased blood pressure? Why are arteries under higher pressure than veins? Would insurance companies insure someone with high blood pressure and why?

17 Plenary: What have you learnt today?
Level Objective Outcome D Describe the structure and function of the heart and blood vessels Complete dissection. Draw and annotate a picture of the heart. Fill in types of blood vessels table C- B Explain what the pulse rate is and what blood pressure measurement tells us. Answer questions on slide 28 A-A* Analyse the correlation between lifestyle affects the risk of heart disease Next lesson: 5 mins

18 Plenary 1 Starting from the left atrium, put the following in the correct order of circulation of the blood: C aorta A left atrium B vena cava D lungs E pulmonary artery I left ventricle F right ventricle H right atrium G pulmonary vein

19 Plenary 2 Why is injuring Why do veins an artery more have valves?
dangerous than injuring a vein? Why do arteries have muscular walls? Why is no body cell more than 0.05 mm away from a capillary? Why are capillary walls only 1 cell layer thick? Which artery is the only one that doesn’t look bright red?
