Blood Flow in the Heart Biology 11 Ms. Lowrie

Ongoing Cycle Could start anywhere Let’s start with… Blood coming through the superior & inferior vena cava Coming back from body … oxygenated or deoxygenated? Deoxygenated

L pulmonary vein R atrium

Blood Flow In right atria Now where? Through valve into right ventricle

L pulmonary vein R atrium

Blood Flow In right ventricle Now where? Through valve into right & left pulmonary arteries

L pulmonary vein R atrium

Blood Flow In pulmonary arteries Where is it going? What will it get? Lungs to get oxygen How does it get back to heart? Through left and right pulmonary veins

L pulmonary vein R atrium

Blood Flow In left atria Now where? Through valve into left ventricle

L pulmonary vein R atrium

Blood Flow In left ventricle Now where? Through valve into aorta & descending aorta

L pulmonary vein R atrium

Let’s see it all together! Any Questions?

L pulmonary vein R atrium

The blood in your body travels in a double marathon, going through your heart TWICE before it completes one full circulation. The first circuit is from the heart to all the tissues and organs except the lungs. The second circuit is from the heart to the lungs, where carbon dioxide diffuses out of the capillaries and oxygen diffuses into the capillaries. Follow a group of red blood cells on their journey around the body!

The End!

Review: Have A Heart! A. Copy diagram

Have A Heart! B. Add labels: Aorta Body capillaries Left atrium Left ventricle Lung capillaries Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein Right atrium Right ventricle Superior/Inferior vena cava

aorta body capillaries left atrium left ventricle lung capillaries pulmonary artery pulmonary vein superior/inferior vena cava right atrium right ventricle

Have A Heart! C. Draw arrows to show the path of blood

aorta body capillaries left atrium left ventricle lung capillaries pulmonary artery pulmonary vein superior/inferior vena cava right atrium right ventricle

Have A Heart! Answer in full sentences: 1. Which side of the heart collects blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs? 2. Which chamber receives blood from the lungs? 3. Which ventricle is more muscular, the right or the left? Explain why. 4. Where are valves found in the circulatory system? Why are they important?

Any Questions? A song about blood flow? Let’s Listen …
