2 What was the Middle Ages?
n Europe, the Middle Ages (or Medieval Period) lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The Middle Ages is the middle period of the three traditional divisions of Western history: classical antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern period. The medieval period is itself subdivided into the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages. The middle ages also included the viking age in northern Europe.

Where: Rome, Italy When: The 13th Century The cycle represents “The crowning of the Holy Virgin” in the cavity of the apse, and “Scenes from Mary’s life” (“The Annunciation”, “The Nativity of Jesus”, “The Dormition of the Virgin”, “The Adoration of the Magi”, “The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple”) in the band below. 4 King David and the Harp Where: Rome Italy When: 10th Century
King David plays the harp in the 10th century Paris Psalter, a classicising work of the Macedonian period. In European Christian culture of the Middle Ages, David was made a member of the Nine Worthies, a group of heroes encapsulating all the ideal qualities of chivalry. Within this painting, unity, foreground and background, with emphasis on the people in the middle.

5 The effects of a good government
Where: Siena, Italy When: 14th Century The Allegory of Good Government carries a strong social message of the value of the stable republican government of Siena. It combines elements of secular life with references to the importance of religion in the city during this time. The artistic qualities that are used in this painting were space with a foreground and background.

6 Mounted warrior with Captive
Where: Sannicolau, Romania, currently in a Museum in Vienna When: 12th Century Only the wealthiest nobles could afford to be a knight. They needed very expensive armor, weapons, and a powerful war horse. The artistic qualities presented in this piece is value and contrast and emphasis on the inside of the coin.

7 Viking Ship Where: Norway When: 9th Century
The Viking ship was perhaps the greatest technical and artistic achievement of the European dark ages. These fast ships had the strength to survive ocean crossings while having a draft of as little as 50 cm (20 inches), allowing navigation in very shallow water. The artistic qualities in the painting are lines, swirls and curves. Which makes it noticeable to be a viking shape to people and villagers of northern Europe
