3 Objective: Students will explore and summarize the post WW1 effects of China and India through their Cornell notes, QWs, and exit slip.

4 Setting the Stage China had faced years of humiliation at the hands of outsiders Many Chinese believed that modernization and nationalism was key for survival Wanted to modernize Build army/navy Others feared change and believe in the traditional ways

5 Kuomintang vs. Qing Dynasty
Kuomintang or Nationalist Party Group led by Sun Yixian that favored democratic ideas Sun spent many years in the U.S. and wanted to change China Qing dynasty Ruled China since 1644 Believed in the traditional ways and wanted to keep China secluded

6 Nationalist Party takes over
1912 Sun becomes president of the new Republic of China Hoped to establish a modern government 1. Nationalism – wanted to end foreign control 2. People’s rights – democracy 3. People’s livelihood – economic security for all Chinese

7 Sun Yixian Fails Had no real power to control the people of China
Lacked military power No authority Warlord armies controlled China Ruled territories as large as their armies could conquer

8 Jiang Jieshi 1925 1928 Jiang took over Sun Yixian’s Kuomintang group
The U.S. and Great Britain recognized Jiang as the President of the Nationalist Republic of China Promised democracy and political rights to all Chinese Government became less democratic and more corrupt

9 Chinese Communist Party on the Rise
Leader = Mao Zedong Promised to support peasants and small farmers Gave land to peasants to gain their support People began to dislike Jiang as he did nothing to improve the lives of the people

10 Civil War in China Nationalist party vs. Communist party
The Long March War between Jiang and Mao Advantage goes to Jiang (support from U.S. and Britain) Civil War gets put off due to Japanese Invasion Pg Think about… What is the Long March? What happened? Who won?

11 Japan invades China Mao and Jiang are forced to ally to fight off the Japanese Civil War will have to wait…

What made the Communist Party appealing in comparison to the Nationalist Party? How did Mao convince so many peasants to join him? Explain. Pg Read “Nationalists and Communists Clash” and “Peasants align themselves with the Communists”
