CANADA AND ITS RESOURCES

Resources are those substances that satisfy human needs or desires
There are 2 kinds of resources: Human Resources: The skills and abilities possessed by the people of a country

Natural Resources: The substances found in nature that people find useful or valuable i.e. minerals, energy fuels, soils, natural vegetation, animal, water, etc

Types of Resources: RENEWABLE Resources which can be replaced by nature in a relatively short period of time (i.e. fish, lumber) At times these resources are harvested too quickly and lose the ability to renew themselves (i.e. overfishing)

NON-RENEWABLE Resources which can not be replaced by nature over a short period of time Once these resources are gone they are gone for good (i.e. you cannot plant gold in the ground and expect more to grow)

-FLOW RESOURCES Resources that are constantly being produced by nature. Essentially, their supply cannot be damaged by human activity. i.e. sunlight, wind, water currents

-OTHER RESOURCES Resources that do not fit into one of the other categories i.e. Northern Lights, Rocky Mountains, and Niagara Falls are considered resources because they attract tourists to Canada, which increases the tourism business.

Canada’s Main Resources
Agriculture Forestry Water Fishing Mining Energy

Two Major Themes Throughout this part of the course we will be looking at two major themes as we discuss resources: The Tragedy of the Commons Sustainable Development
