2. Main Idea:
Perhaps Rome’s greatest achievement was its rule of law and justice. Ideas from Roman Law are a part of western civilization today. (Western Civilization = The U.S. & Western Europe)

3. The 12 Tables
Roman law was written down in a code known as the 12 Tables.
It had 3 main characteristics:
It applied to all people under Roman Rule.
It created stability and unity during the Roman Empire.
It had 5 basic principles familiar to us today!

4. The 5 Basic Principles of Roman Law:
People are equal under the law.
The accused can face the accusers and defend against the charge.
Decisions must be based on fairness.
A person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Guilt but be clearly established.
