2 Flow Chart for Protein Synthesis
On the right hand side of one page, work with a partner to put in order the steps of protein synthesis. Cut the pieces apart and place them in order so that the arrows show the correct sequence of events. When you are finished, raise your hand to have the teacher check your work.

3 Flow Chart for Protein Synthesis
The section of DNA located on a specific chromosome is copied onto a strand. of messenger RNA. The messenger RNA strand leaves the nucleus of the cell and enters the cytoplasm. A ribosome reads the strand of messenger RNA in sets of three (called codons) and attaches the corresponding transfer RNA with its amino acid attached. Amino acids are attached together in sequential order to make a protein. The long strand of protein forms a 3-dimensional structure that can be used by the body.

5 1) Transcription DNA  messenger RNA (mRNA) In the nucleus
Glue down the top edge of the “mRNA synthesis” picture so that it makes a flap. Beneath the flap, write the following… DNA  messenger RNA (mRNA) In the nucleus Purpose: DNA (B1) cannot leave the nucleus, so the genetic code is transcribed/copied onto a strand of mRNA (B2). mRNA is single stranded & includes uracil (U) instead of thymine (T).

6 1) Transcription In the picture, shade the DNA strand one color and the mRNA strand a different color.

7 2) Translation Glue down the top edge of the second picture so that it makes a flap. Beneath the flap, write the following… mRNA  amino acid sequence Occurs at ribosome Transfer RNA (tRNA) bring amino acids Purpose: Translates genetic code into amino acids to build a protein. tRNA pairs up with mRNA three base pairs at a time (codon/anticodon) Each codon makes 1 amino acid

8 Protein Synthesis Practice
Complete this chart to show the mRNA, tRNA and amino acid that would correspond to each three base-pair DNA sequence. We will do a few together, and then volunteers will “model” the process for the remaining sequences.
