Overview… Did you know? Ports have, throughout history, been a place where goods and people arrive or leave the country by sea. Logistics is the management, movement & storage of products. It is about getting the right product to the right place, at the right time. It is also about the movement of people by road, rail, sea and air. It includes postal and courier services. Large companies such as supermarkets run their own logistics while other companies outsource all their logistics to specialist companies. The Ports & Logistics Sector accounts for 4.2% of the region’s workforce, employing 26,200 people 12,000 jobs were created in this sector in the Liverpool City Region between 2010 and 2016 – mainly in transport and warehousing There are over 2000 businesses operating in this sector in the City Region Average annual gross pay for the transportation and storage sector in 2016 was £25,430 Will there be opportunities? Key Projects relating to growth: The sector is set to continue to grow in the Liverpool City Region as a result of the investment in the Energy and Renewable Sector. Liverpool 2 Deep Water In River Post Panamax Container Terminal Mersey Gateway Bridge Growth is expected at 0.5% per year up to 2015 creating an additional 1600 jobs in the area. Liverpool John Lennon Airport expansion 41% of the workforce is age 50+ meaning replacement demand will be important over the next ten years. Logistics is not just about driving—there are a variety of occupations within the industry Stevedore As a Stevedore you would work on vessels like container ships and roll-on/roll-off ferries loading and unloading cargo or containers, using ship or dockside cranes. Other jobs: Rigger, Removals Operative, Forklift Truck Driver, Courier, Chandler, Drivers Mate, Warehouse Operative, Deckhand, Transport Clerk, LGV Driver, Train Driver Warehouse Manager Warehouse managers plan and co-ordinate warehouse operations at distribution depots, retail superstores and manufacturing plants. Other jobs: Purchasing Officer, Customer Service Assistant, Large Goods Vehicle Instructor, Crane Driver, Air Cabin Crew, Postal Delivery Worker (Postman) Road Transport Manager Road Transport Managers plan and co-ordinate freight and transport operations on the country’s road networks. Other jobs: Inventory Specialist, Operations Manager, Logistics Manager, Transport Planner, Freight Forwarder Harbour Master A Harbour Master is an official responsible for enforcing the regulations of a particular harbour or port, in order to ensure the safety of navigation, the security of the harbour and the correct operation of the port facilities. Other jobs: Contract Manager, Pilot, Distribution Manager, Logistics Director
