2 First … Answer these questions: What is biomass?
How is it used to make electricity? Does it add to climate change?

3 Next 2. Look at the following picture slides and answer the questions from slide 1. (Make notes.)

4 As crops grow they absorb carbon dioxide from the air.

5 When the crops reach the right size they are harvested and turned into straw or ‘biomass’.

6 This biomass is taken to a power station
This biomass is taken to a power station. The biomass is burned at very high temperatures to generate heat,

7 which is used to turn water into steam.

8 The steam is used to turn a turbine and generator, which produces electricity.

9 Burning biomass releases carbon dioxide
Burning biomass releases carbon dioxide. But growing new crops absorbs carbon dioxide.

10 So long as we keep growing new crops to replace those turned into biomass, this fuel does not add to climate change.

11 Now … Check your answers in groups.
Do exercise 1 on the worksheet: match the two parts of each sentence. 5. Do exercise 2 on the worksheet: use the prompts to write sentences.

12 Presentation (for classes working in groups only)
6. Give an oral commentary on the picture slides.
