Psalm 5:11 But let all who take refuge in You be glad, Let them ever sing for joy; And may You shelter them, That those who love Your name may exult in You. Hymns Invitation Red Songbook - Supplemental

Jonah Prayed Jonah 2 2Ki 14:23 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria, and reigned forty-one years. 2Ki 14:25 He restored the border of Israel from the entrance of Hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD, the God of Israel, which He spoke through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gath-hepher.

Jonah and Jesus But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:39-40 There are TWO parallels between Jesus and Jonah. One is the consumption of Jonah by the fish (whale in KJV), the second is the preaching of Jonah. This moment compares to the mind of Jesus when He was in the grave. Therefore, this prayer is particularly insightful

Great Prayers of the Bible
Jesus in John 17 David in the Psalms Hezekiah in 2 Chronicles 32 Elijah in 1 Kings 17

A Prayer from the Dead Jonah’s prayer is unique as it is from the grave “out of the belly of hell cried I” – Jonah 2:2 (KJV) Sheol/Hades – the grave This was a horrific experience! Jonah’s prayer is of a man utterly devastated Some see this prayer like a psalm, possibly composed after the fact.

A Prayer from the Dead Jonah’s prayer is unique as it is from the grave Jonah’s prayer is unusual in giving thanks Giving thanks for deliverance We need to pray as thought it has happened Mark 11:22-26 Mr 11:22 So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have faith in God. 23 "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. 25 "And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 "But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses."

A Prayer from the Dead Jonah’s prayer is unique as it is from the grave Jonah’s prayer is unusual in giving thanks Jonah reminds us of paying our vows God is angry when we do not Numbers 30:2, Ecclesiastes 5:4-6 Nu 30:2 "If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. Ec 5:4 ¶ When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed- 5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay. 6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?
