How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Females Normally, in a conventional comedy film, the distribution between females and males would be balanced however,we chose to break this convention by having our opening sequence purely focusing around the two female protagonists. At first, the male gender may view this opening as girly due to the two shot of the protagonists in a picture frame. However, as the opening continues and the two character’s personalities start to develop, the audience see them as merely humorous and if anything, even tomboyish while still including the typicals factors girls can relate to e.g. hairstyles, clothes, etc.

A blackout transition is when we are first introduced to the enigmas of two female characters. The scene starts with Monique; the camera zooms in and fades to blackout, the next shot reappears from blackout and zooms out to be introduced to the other female character. This was a very intricate shot as it linked together as if they were the same person, conveying the friendship as they are ‘one unit’.

Stereotypes Even though the opening sequence only presents the female gender, there are no gender stereotypes, creating an aspect of equality within the film that causes a wider target audience. We wanted our audiences to see all genders as equal and so deliberately focused on their comprehensive characteristics. We chose to do so to attract a more broad audience.

The colour of the room is overall white, having no implications of any stereotypical colour. This character is also getting up in a unique way to make the audience find it humorous. The clothing wore by the character’s are also non stereotypical as they are both wearing the colour of white and grey. These colours have no inference with gender at all. This makes the viewer’s interest increase not due to their clothings and other distractions, but to their characteristics and the way the audience can empathize with the characters.

Age We wanted our age category to be targeted towards Teenagers around The reason for this is because we have a lot of implications towards school and an average morning routine for teens. This age range would really relate to the subjects we presents like stress from overdue homework, getting ready for school, etc.

In the previous shot, it is a close up shot of Monique taking a childish cereal, loved by many to portray her age in depth. She also uses a wooden spoon to eat cereal in this medium close up. This makes the audience view her character as reckless yet quirky as she dances while eating the cereal.

Shot from the character of Imzy’s stress from schoolwork
Shot from the character of Imzy’s stress from schoolwork. As the view can see, there is hardly any implications to a girly stereotype.

Friendship Overall, our opening sequence is centered around the concept of friendship and the relationship between two best friends. This not only shows a strong primary social group between the two characters, but also a view of how each character views the other. Our young target audience can relate to this concept because their social lives and relationships with their friends are the main focus at their age.
