3 4.1 Solving an Archaeological Mystery
Archaeologists study past civilizations by excavation ancient settlements and examining the artifacts of the people who lived there. On digs in southeaster Montana and north-central Wyoming, archaeologists discovered the remains of two Native American settlements. They unearthed a number of arrowheads at both sites. The tables on the next page list the length, width, and neck width for each arrowhead that was found. All measurements are in millimeters.

4 The archaeologists hoped to use the arrowhead data to estimate the time period during which each site was inhabited. To help them, they used arrowhead data from four other settlement sites.

5 The archaeologists knew that two of the sites -
Laddie Creek/Dead Indian Creek Kobold/Buffalo Creek Were settled between 4000 B.C. and A.D. 500. The other two sites - Big Goose Creek Wortham Shelter Were settled between A.D. 500 and A.D The arrowhead data for these four sites are given on page 51 of your book!!

6 HOW COULD YOU USE THIS DATA TO HELP YOU GUESS
THINK ABOUT THIS! HOW COULD YOU USE THIS DATA TO HELP YOU GUESS THE SETTLEMENT PERIODS FOR THE NEW SITES?????

7 Problem 4.1 The archaeologists hypothesized that Native Americans inhabiting the same area of the country during the same time period would have fashioned similar tools. A. Use what you know about statistics and data representations to compare the arrowheads from the known sites. ** 4000 B.C. to A.D. 500 OR A.D to A.D 1600** Based on your comparisons, during which time period do you think Site I was settled?? During which time period do you think Site II was settled? Explain how your statistics and graphs support your answers.

8 B. Compare the widths or the arrowheads discovered at the new sites with the widths of the arrowheads from the known sites. Do your findings support your answers from part A? Explain.

9 C. If the archaeologists had collected only a few arrowheads from each new sites, might they have reached a different conclusion? Explain.

10 Problem 4.1 Follow – Up Select a random sample of 15 arrowheads from each of the six sites. For each arrowhead, find the ratio of length to width. Express each ration as a decimal rounded to the hundredths place.

11 Compare the length – to – width ratios for the various sites.
Do the ratios help you match the new sites with the sites whose settlement time is know? Explain your answer.
