2 The Bill of Rights Intro to Ch. 8

3 Bill of Rights PSA Signup
As mentioned before, the Bill of Rights is an important part of being a citizen in the U.S. today. These amendments protect our rights, from an oppressive government. Perhaps more than ever, these are crucial to us. You’ll be picking one of the following (working in groups of no more than three people); sign up on the board below: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th & 7th 8th 9th & 10th Optional (if all others are already taken): 13th, 15th, 19th, 26th.

4 Bill of Rights PSA Assignment
Today we will be studying in depth an amendment that clarifies rights that we as citizens have. These include: The first 10 Amendments are known as the Bill of Rights. The others added other rights later. Now that you’ve chosen one, spend 5 min. reading the original text of the amendment (pp ). Then, discuss what it means to YOU as a group. Let’s answer the following questions: What right(s) does your amendment protect / guarantee? How can we exercise these rights, and how might they be infringed / abused? Give some good examples!

5 Create a PSA Poster! Now you will be creating a poster to make people aware of these rights! These will be posted around the school, so make sure you do your best work! Other things to Consider: Why is it important to respect others’ rights, even if we disagree with them? Include a Did You Know? section, where you share any additional interesting / noteworthy info you learned (at least 3 things) Use some illustrations / pictures to keep the poster interesting. Make sure to cite all pictures / info too (backside) Make sure your poster inspires and calls others to action! Use bullet points to keeps info organized in easy to digest chunks. Feel free to use Google Drawings to create a nice professional looking poster for free: Make sure to have accurate facts! (at least 5 for full points) Review the rubric on the back, and make sure to follow it for full points!

6 Outline (Due: D9) Now that you have read the amendment and understand the assignment, I want you to spend 10 min creating an outline for your poster; include the following: Define the rights protected by your amendment; you can summarize / simplify. Give examples of ways those rights are used and / or potentially denied! What interesting facts (as you research about your amendment / rights) have you learned? Share those in your Did You Know? Consider illustration(s) that you could use to strengthen your PSA message (what will inspire / catch people’s eyes?) Use Bullet Points to make info easy to digest / absorb. Consider the rubric, and sketch out a rough draft of your poster.
