Symbolism: Using a symbol- a word or object that stands for an idea. What’s your example?? Foreshadowing: hints and clues that tip the reader off as to what is to come later in the work “I had heard another sound… Someone inside the house was laughing.”

Characterization: the actions, words, and others’ opinions that help shape our idea of a character “Calpurnia was something else again. She was all angles and bones; she was nearsighted; she squinted; her hand was as wide as a bed slat and twice as hard.” Setting: the time, place, physical details, and circumstances in which a situation occurs. “In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks; the courthouse sagged in the square.”

Flashback: a narrative technique that allows a writer to present past events during current events What’s your example?? Theme: a repeated main idea that is incorporated throughout a literary work “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.”

Irony: referring to how a person or situation is not as it would actually seem; often it is the exact opposite. What’s your example??!? Simile: a simile is a type of figurative language that makes a comparison between two objects or ideas using the words "like" or "as.” “Ladies bathed before noon…and by nightfall were like soft tea cakes.”
