4 Why You May Struggle With Self Promotion
Women are taught to be self-effacing Don’t be a show off Don’t talk about your accomplishments Don’t upstage your husband What messages did you get? If you’re like most women self promotion doesn’t come easily. When you get a compliment, what do you do? Say thank you, look the person in the eye and say that’s so nice of you. Tell Pat’s story. 5 # 1 Ditch the Pitch Take a genuine interest in others.
Take the self out of self promotion! Find out about their challenges first. Tailor your response to their needs. Take the self out of self promotion. Elevator pitches are all about us. We feel uncomfortable saying them and we often lose our audience when we deliver our pitch. It seems fake, stylized, too rehearsed, and inauthentic. Stop explaining what you do. The prospect doesn't care. Ask what THEY do, what their biggest challenges are. Once you find out, tell them you help businesses or organizations like them [promote, achieve better results, etc.] Then ask them if you could have 10 minutes of their time to see if you can help them in the future. If you can't help, you'll tell them so, or refer them to someone else. And be able to recommend their services to your contacts. THEN you exchange business cards. Then and only then. You have officially started a relationship. Good luck! How did you get started in your work? How would I know a good referral for you? The more specific you are, the better.
