21 The Sequence or Timeline Window
Render Area: Red: no preview file Yellow: same Green: has preview file No color: no need for preview file “What the heck does all that mean?!”

22 The Sequence or Timeline Window
Rendering MAY BE necessary when a RED LINE appears above any section of your timeline. This means you have placed an effect or changed some aspect of the footage there, so the computer must do some MATH on that section creating ANOTHER FILE it looks at so the sequence may be played at normal speed without “hanging;” this means “render.”

23 The Sequence or Timeline Window
You DO NOT need to render UNLESS YOUR PROJECT “HANGS” OR DOES NOT PLAY SMOOTHLY. This does not happen often—only if you have MAJOR effects in your sequence. If you play your project and it hangs, you may Render.

24 The Sequence or Timeline Window
If you ever do need to render: Place the Work Area Bar over the PART of the sequence you want to render (or the whole thing) Press “Enter.”

25 The Sequence or Timeline Window
Render: 1. cause to become; make Render Bar: Stretch the ends to the head and tail of your work to render if necessary To Render a section: Place the Render Bar above the desired area to render; Press “Enter” After it renders, the RED turns to GREEN
