5 The Collection Imagine a visitor or new Christian – the collection is a bit intimidating “Am I expected to give?” “Do they just want my money?”

6 Our Commandment Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come Corinthians 16:1-2

7 A command to all churches

9 Our Commandment The manner of giving
Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come Corinthians 16:1-2

10 Our Commandment Questions: How do I know what to give? What is the purpose for which it is used? Is this practical or spiritual?

11 How to Determine Giving
It is not: A tithe – mandatory 10% A tax – required expected amount

12 How to Determine Giving
2 Corinthians 8: Giving of your own accord (vs. 3) - Not according to what you don’t have (vs. 12) - It is to your advantage (vs. 10) 2 Corinthians 9 - As you purpose in your heart (vs. 7)

13 What Happens to What We Give?
Taken as a collected amount (treasury) Taken before the need arose - Acts 11:28 Held in collection to be used – 1 Cor. 16:3 Ac 2:45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. It is appropriate to hold money for use later. This is a practical aspect of a collection

14 For What Is It Used? First collections – Acts 2, 4, 6 - As local Christians had a need (2:45) - As local Christians had ANY need (4:35) - Daily distributions to widows (6:1) Later collections – Acts 11, 1 Cor. 9,16 - Relief of brethren in a famine - Support of those who work in the Gospel Ac 2:45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Ac 4:34 For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales 35 and lay them at the apostles' feet, and they would be distributed to each as any had need. Ac 6:1 ¶ Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. Ac 11:29 And in the proportion that any of the disciples had means, each of them determined to send a contribution for the relief of the brethren living in Judea 1Co 9:14 So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.

15 For What Is It Used? To help local members in need - No need is specified; “as they had need” - Qualification: 2 Thes. 3:10 To help other Christians in emergencies - Not a regular occurrence Support of the widows in a congregation - Qualifications: 1 Tim. 5:3-10 2Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either 1Ti 5:9 A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.

16 For What Is It Used? There is no authority for it to be used: For social activities For non-Christians For organizations to do church works

17 The Practical and Spiritual
2 Corinthians 9:10-15 For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God. Is giving a practical matter or a spiritual matter? Practical means we give as there is a need; spiritual means that the work is giving itself, not the end purpose. The answer seems to be bother

18 The Practical and Spiritual
2 Corinthians 9: HE supplied the blessing - We thank HIM for the support - We praise HIM for each other

19 Conclusions Giving is the work of Christians - It makes us better to God - It is for us to accomplish God’s purpose - It has a very narrow purpose

20

21 What Does It Take To Join The Family Of God?
Hear and believe – Romans 10:17 Confession of Jesus – Hebrews 10:23 Repentance from sin – Acts 2:38 Baptism into Christ – Mark 16:16 Walking in the New Life – 2 Corinthians 5:7
