7 Two Sides of Hospitality
Last week we discussed the need to avoid partiality. We need to engage all of our members; none should be left out or fall through the cracks Hospitality is a powerful way we forge the bonds of family. It is not a work of the church, but of the members.

8 What Visitors Seek Love – Galatians 6:1 Work – Ephesians 4:12
Soundness – 2 Timothy 2:2 Sacrifice – Romans 12:1 Community – Acts 2:44-46 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Ephesians 2:19 Love (Gal 6:1, etc) (1) Do we Love the Lord, or give lip service (2) Do we Love each other Teaching (2 Tim 2:2) (1) Doctrinally sound (2) Desire to learn and to teach Sacrifice (Rom 12:1) (1) This goes to show how much we love, community Evangelism (Eph 4:13) (1) Are we about the Lord's work (all of the work of the church) Community (Acts 2:44-46) (1) How involved in each other's lives are we (2) Is the assembly the only place we see one another?

9 Community is Revealed in Hospitality
Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it Hebrews 13:1-2

10 Community is Revealed in Hospitality
Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint Peter 4:8-9

11 Community is Revealed in Hospitality
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality Romans 12:10-13

12 Community is Revealed in Hospitality
“Community leaders” are qualified by being hospitable: Titus 1:7-8 “the overseer must be .....hospitable” 1 Timothy 3:2 “An overseer, then, must be ...hospitable”

13 What is Hospitality? In our language, it refers to “hosting” those in need Hospice, Hospital – places of rest for the needy In the New Testament, the word was Philoxenos: (brotherly) love of strangers Hospitality is a work of Christians, NOT the church

14 What is Hospitality? Hebrews 13:2 – A reminder by two men
Abraham – Genesis 18:2-5 Lot – Genesis 19:1-3

15 What is Hospitality? What did Abraham and Lot do?
Ran to greet their visitors Begged them to stay Offered them the comfort of their home Provided them sustenance

16 do WE do with visitors and members?
What is Hospitality? What did Abraham and Lot do? Ran to greet their visitors Begged them to stay Offered them the comfort of their home Provided them sustenance do WE do with visitors and members?

17 Growing Hospitality Grows Community
We desire to be a community: Members have a great joy in participating Visitors sense our affection for them and each other The world covets membership Becoming such requires MORE effort to hospitality The church CANNOT do this work for us

18 The First Side of Hospitality
There is room to grow individually in hospitality We need to run, beg, offer and provide: To our visitors EVEN MORE to our members Some members do not get a sense that this is how we feel about visitors OR one another

19 The Other Side of Hospitality
Not all (of us) can “host” ALL of us can receive hospitality

20

21 The Other Side of Hospitality
Luke 14:16-24 Consider the master’s displeasure Consider the hurt feelings of one another In the coming weeks there are opportunities to come together when brethren have offered hospitality We wont announce these things in the church to avoid even appearing to do this work

22 Call to Action Understanding hospitality underlies community
THE CHURCH cannot do this work for us Committing to growing our hospitality SEEING OPPORTUNITY to grown ourselves Committing to receiving hospitality TO PARTICIPATE in any opportunity

24 The Hospitality of God Matthew 22:9
“Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast” Heb 12:1 ¶ Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

25 Matthew 22:11-13 But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?” And the man was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness….” Heb 12:1 ¶ Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
