1 AP Words and Things By Annie Robinson

2 Adulation (Noun) :Obsequious flattery; excessive admiration or praise. Example: I have a lot of adulation for my hero, John William Ferrell.

4 Aesthetic (Adjective) :Concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty. Example: Many millennials try and use the word aesthetic to describe random tumblr pictures that they feel represent them, however, the word is more appropriately used to describe the aesthetic changes they are making to the outside of the building.

8 Ascetic (Adjective) :Characterized by or suggesting the practice of severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons. Example: The man took an ascetic vow and became a monk.

9 Austere (Adjective) :Severe or strict in manner, attitude, or appearance. Example: When some people sign up to join the army, they don’t ever realize how austere it actually is.

10 Dogmatic (Adjective) :Any strong set of principles concerning faith, morals, etc., as those laid down by a church; doctrinal Example: Dogmatic beliefs can seem extreme or hypocritical when people start pulling out the picket signs.

11 Heretic (Noun) :Anyone who does not conform to an established attitude, doctrine, or principle. Usually associated with religious opinions Ex: Martin Luther was considered a heretic because he publically disagreed with the Catholic church.

12 Philistine (Noun) :A person who is hostile or indifferent to culture and the arts, or who has no understanding of them. The old man was a philistine, he cared nothing for art: if he could not use something to help grow crops on his farm then it had no real use to him.

13 Pious (Adjective) :Devoutly religious. Example: He was a very pious man; he hadn’t missed a church service in the last seventeen years.

15 Zeal (Noun) :great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective. Example: Annie Robinson planned dances with great zeal.

16 Allegory A narrative with multiple levels of meaning.
Examples: The Cave, Animal Farm, vulture scene in TEWWG

17 Allusion A literary, historical, religious, or mythological reference
Example: In Maus there are a lot of visual allusions to Nazi Germany Common Allusions: Scrooge, Cinderella, Achilles’ heel, muse, prodigal son, Uncle Sam

18 Claim An assertion of something as fact.
Example: The sky is blue. The sun is the center of our universe. Beyoncé is part of the illuminati.

19 Description : Description tells readers about the physical characteristics of a person, place, or thing. Description relies on the five senses—sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. Living Like Weasels Once More to the Lake
