3 Where did this concept come from?
In 2013, there was a recommendation from the Multicultural Center Planning Committee to establish a Multicultural Center, including a staffing, programming, and resource plan. In 2014, the Center was created, but due to budget cuts, no staffing and fiscal support for programming were available to support underrepresented students who attend SIUE. On March 15, 2015 Create cross-divisional programs that support our students, especially underrepresented and first generation. March 23, 2015 June 28, 2015 July 1, 2015 to July 1, 2017.

5 Where did this concept come from?
October 2015 – Chancellor’s Council meets with 50 Black students where a list of recommendations are provided. December 2015 – Chancellor’s Council meets with students and faculty and provide an additional set of recommendations to support Black students. January 2016 – Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs meets with HSU (Hispanic Student Union) to discuss how the university can support them better. February 2016 – Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs meets with GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) and Safe Zone to discuss how the university can better support LGBTQ students.

6 Where did this concept come from?
February 2017 – Town Hall is held with underrepresented students. July 2017 – State Budget passes! Why is this important? August Sustained Dialogue Program starts November 2017 – Chancellor decided to move the Multicultural Center from the University Diversity and Inclusion Office to the Division of Student Affairs and rename the Office, the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion.

7 Where did this concept come from
Since November a team of professional staff from Student Affairs has; Written Job Descriptions Developed the purpose of the Center Came up with the appropriate title and name (Dr. P and Dr. H) Searched and hired our Inaugural Director Re-Purposed Staff Hired Graduate Assistants Written and received an Innovation Grant to support programming Building a new office

8 What’s the Center’s Purpose?
To provide the needed resources to support the success of the underrepresented students; The Center will meet many of the needs that have been identified by underrepresented students; Programming and services will be designed to improve the retention rate for underrepresented students; and The Center will be a visible and tangible display of the university’s commitment to the integration of diversity and inclusion within the university community and to our students.

10 Some Initial Thoughts on Purpose
Continue the great work from the Sustained Dialogue Program Develop a pre-enrollment transition/orientation program for underrepresented students. Develop a peer-mentoring programs for underrepresented students in collaboration with Academic Affairs. Plan and facilitate educational enrichment seminars and social support activities. Develop and coordinate programming to promote diversity, cultural awareness and inclusion within the campus community. Chair the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) campus celebration. Oversee the graduation celebrations for underrepresented students each semester.

11 Some other initial thoughts
This is not the only office who will be responsible for Diversity and Inclusion. Value added programming. There is already great programming happening on campus. Complement what is already happening. Assessment of what we are and aren’t doing Develop strategic plan Bring together and help coordinate

12 How are we staffing this new Center
Director for Student Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Timothy Staples, a 2000 graduate of SIUE Assistant Director Tarsha Moore, undergraduate and graduate degree from SIUE Graduate Assistants Taylor Johnson, 2nd year CSPA student Tionna Hunter, 1st year CSPA student Support Staff To be hired by new team Student Workers Practicum Interns

13 Where is it located? A new center is currently under construction in former meeting room A, with offices for the Director and Assistant Director, Graduate Student work area, reception desk and furniture for studying, having meetings, and for student engagement. The MUC Master Plan call for a new location for the center to be located on the main floor, in between Auntie Anne’s and the Men’s restroom, reaching back into the Cougar Store. Former Multicultural Center being repurposed to be the Magnolia Room. International Room transitioning to the OHIO room!!
