2 Figure 1 Schematic Illustrating the Hierarchical Nature of 3D Chromatin Organization. The nucleus is divided into territories occupied by single chromosomes, which do not overlap and intermingle significantly, except for compartment associations at their interfaces. There are two compartments active A-compartments and inactive B-compartments. They comprise many interaction clusters distributed throughout the nucleus, where chromatin of the same compartment type associates. Locally, chromatin assembles into topologically associating domains (TADS). Two different TAD models are depicted for mouse (top) and Drosophila (bottom).
