TEAM LEADERS may NOT provide any coaching, hints, gestures, or confirmations to the team during the rounds of competition. Providing such confirmations will result in forfeiture of the entire round (=0 points).

12 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderators
The MODERATOR serves as the questioner and judge in one of the competition rooms. MODERATORS remain in the same room for all 3 rounds. MODERATORS will not see their own school’s team(s) until after the competition ends.

13 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderator Info
Room setup – push chairs to the perimeter of the room. Students sit in a huddle on the floor and parents/guests sit in the chairs. Teams have 20 seconds to answer a question. If a team is trying to earn points AFTER the other team misses the question, they must answer immediately. There is no time for deliberation. Remind parents that when students are conferring, it is important that the room remain quiet (i.e. no cell phones, no texting, if small children are disruptive kindly ask them to step into the hall, etc.).  Each team is permitted to have 12 students participate in each round. If a team has more than 12 students, the extra students will need to sit out the round (NOTE: teams may have from 8-15 students). 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderator Info

14 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderator Info (Continued)
The first round will be slightly longer than the second and third rounds to allow everyone additional time to acclimate themselves to the competition format.   The guidelines state that moderators must repeat each question and answer twice. Please use your judgment to decide if this is necessary.   If you finish a round early, please tell the teams to remain in the classroom until the announcement is made to move to the next round. This will prevent other rooms from being distracted by noise in the hallways. 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderator Info (Continued)

15 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderator Info (cont’d)
If a MODERATOR witnesses a TEAM LEADER (or outside observer) providing hints/help to their team DURING THE ROUND, the MODERATOR will exclude that team from any further questions (=0 for the round), and the opposing team will receive the remainder of their 20 questions. NOTE: Before round 1 begins, MODERATORS should shuffle questions for each individual round to make sure a variety of books are covered during the rounds of questioning. 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics Moderator Info (cont’d)

21 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics night of rules
On the night of the competition, each team is required to send three adults. One will serve as a team leader, one a moderator and the third will serve as scorekeeper. In case one adult cancels, be sure to have a substitute ready to step in and assume the designated role. The adults are responsible for ensuring that all their assigned students leave the competition safely. Adults are not permitted to leave the competition site until all their assigned students have been picked up. We will need to leave Northley MS as quickly as possible following the competition. To make sure all your students have a ride home, please arrange for your team to meet outside the building. Have a parent pick-up policy in place before the competition.

22 2019 Delaware County Reading Olympics parent info
Please encourage parents/guardians to attend the event and celebrate their children’s accomplishments.  Please have your students complete the “Where’s My Olympian” card prior to the competition. This will be sent out a few weeks before the competition. Providing this information to parents ahead of time will allow them to quickly find their child on the night of the competition.   Your students are your responsibility!
