Magnetism
2
What is a magnet? Any material that attracts iron or anything that contains iron
3
Magnets and the Atomic Theory
Electrons Spin, which creates a tiny magnetic field. Materials that are not magnetic have most of their electrons paired, which cancels out the magnetic fields. Materials that are magnetic have their electrons unpaired. This means that all the tiny magnetic fields are added together.
4
3 Properties of magnets 1: Attract iron and materials containing iron
2: Attract or repel other magnets 3: One part of magnet will always point North when allowed to swing freely
5
Law of Magnetism Law of magnetism states:
Unlike or opposite poles attract Like or same poles repel each other
6
Why do they attract and repel?
Poles Magnets have a North and South Pole What happens if you bring like poles together? Unlike poles together? This is called magnetic force! Force- a push or pull that can cause an object to move
7
Magnetic Poles
8
Magnetic Fields Invisible
Come out from one pole, curve around magnet, and return to opposite pole Strongest where lines closest together! Move in only one direction (North to South)
9
Simple Magnetic Field
10
Combined Magnetic fields
Remember how the poles work? Repel Attract
