5 Jacob Made Peace Why did Jacob make peace? It was not (all) his fault He really did not do anything evil to his brother Because he KNEW his brother had been offended Because he WANTED to live in peace with his brother Jacob never directly mentions his past issues, in part because it was not all his fault. He did not apologize for something he didn’t do, but he did acknowledge that he needed to repair this

He did not apologize for something he didn’t do, but he did acknowledge that he needed to repair this

7 Jacob Made Peace Jacob’s reconciliation with Esau is an important lesson on peacemaking Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” Why did Jacob make peace? It was not (all) his fault He really did not do anything evil to his brother Because he KNEW his brother had been offended Matthew 5:23-26 Because he WANTED to live in peace with his brother Romans 12:18

8 Importance of Peacemaking
We need to WANT to live in peace with others Romans 12:18 We need to PURSUE peace with others Hebrews 12:14 How do we make and pursue peace with others? Ro 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

9 Importance of Peacemaking
1. By acknowledging when we are wrong We have sinned against another Matthew 18:15-17 We ought to be people who quickly admit wrong 1 John 1:8 Even towards unbelievers Mt 18:15 ¶ "If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. 17 "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 1Jo 1:8 ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

10 Importance of Peacemaking
1. By acknowledging when we are wrong 2. By acknowledging when we have hurt someone Sometimes we hurt others WITHOUT FAULT We still have a divine obligation Matthew 5:23-26 We CANNOT allow a division to stand Mt 5:23 "Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. 25 "Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 "Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.

11 Importance of Peacemaking
1. By acknowledging when we are wrong 2. By acknowledging when we have hurt someone 3. By acting to make amends Sometimes we must do something to reconcile Overtures of peace Proverbs 18:16, 21:14 An attitude of “I will if they will” is not enough! Pr 18:16 ¶ A man's gift makes room for him And brings him before great men. Pr 21:14 ¶ A gift in secret subdues anger, And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.

12 Importance of Peacemaking
1. By acknowledging when we are wrong 2. By acknowledging when we have hurt someone 3. By acting to make amends 4. By taking the extra step not to offend Going above and beyond to avoid offense Matthew 17: Corinthians 10:32-33 Mt 17:24 ¶ When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, "Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?" 25 He *said, "Yes." And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?" 27 "However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.“ 1Co 10:32 Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; 33 just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.

13 Sometimes Peace Cannot Be
We can only go so far to achieve peace “so far as it depends on you” – Romans 12:18 We cannot achieve peace if: We don’t know that we have offended Others are unwilling to reconcile It is a matter of sinful behavior of others

14

15 The Most Important Peace
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…… For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life Romans 5:1,10

16 Making Peace With God Hearing……………………………….…….Romans 10:17 Believing……………..…………………..……Mark 16:16 Confessing……………………………..……Romans 10:9 Repenting………………………………………….Acts 2:38 Being Baptized………………………… Peter 3:21 Overcoming..…………………………..Revelation 2:11
