1 Chemical Bonds Wednesday, November 29th, 2017

2 Why do we bond? The number of valence electrons determines the types of bonds an atom will form Chemical bonds are an atom’s attempt to fill an electron shell (get a stable octet)

3 Ionic Bond Usually forms between a metal and nonmetal
Transfer of electrons Cation + Anion

4 Covalent Bonds Usually forms between two nonmetals
Sharing of electrons so both atoms get a full octet

5 Metallic Bonds Usually forms between two metals
Holds metals together very tightly Electron cloud with high conductivity

6 Properties of Covalent Compounds
1)  Covalent compounds generally have much lower melting and boiling points than ionic compounds.  2)  Covalent compounds are soft and squishy (compared to ionic compounds, anyway).

7 Properties, Cont’d 3)  Covalent compounds tend to be more flammable than ionic compounds. There are exceptions to this rule! 4)  Covalent compounds don't conduct electricity in water.
