Differentiation rules Applications of differentiation Integrals Application of integration Techniques of integration

6 MA265 Syllabus Learning Outcomes
By completing the course, students will learn the fundamental concepts in single variable calculus, including limits, derivatives and integrals; will understand the basic properties of limits and derivatives and their applications in natural and social sciences, will learn a set of integration techniques and be able to solve many application problems by applying these techniques.

7 MA265 Syllabus Why do we need calculus?
Example. How to define areas and volumes?

8 MA265 Syllabus Example. How to define areas and volumes?

9 MA265 Syllabus Example. How far did a car travel for 2 hours?
If a vehicle moves a constant velocity for 2 hours, then the distance traveled is 𝑑=𝑣𝑡=60 mph ∗2 hr =120 miles However, what is the vehicle’s velocity is keep changing? 𝑣 (mph) 𝑣 (mph) 60 60 𝑡 (hr) 𝑡 (hr) 2 2

10 MA265 Syllabus Other Examples Example. Rate of change Example. Work
If the force 𝐹 is constant, then 𝑊=𝐹∗𝑑 What is 𝐹 is not constant?

11 Note: Course materials will be put on educat.nmu.edu
