200,000 Helots controlled by 10,000 citizens. Spartan lives were regulated from birth to death Practiced infanticide

4 Government Two kings ruled jointly.
Five overseers elected by the assembly. Assembly all citizens over 20- made all the laws. Council of elders: twenty-eight men over the age of sixty. Proposed laws and served on the supreme court.

5 Schooling Boys started school at age 7
Consisted of reading, writing, and military training Male students taught to be tougher: no shoes, one garment for the WHOLE YEAR Taught to fight on an empty stomach Learned to forage for food Taught to lie, cheat, and steal Also taught never to be caught! - if caught, punishment was severe and had to be endured in silence

7 Society Women were trained to be mothers of soldiers
Progression of Spartans: Age 20 – Men went to the frontier areas Age 30 – Men married, but lived in military barracks Age 60 – You could finally retire from the army (if you were still alive!!)

10 Government Draco: A harsh tyrant, later came to signify a harsh code of written laws (Draconian). Solon: Cancelled all land debts, and freed debtors from slavery. Peisistratus: Put many of the poor to work building public works. Cleisthenes: Established Democracy for Athens. Assembly of all citizens/ full power. Women did not have political power. Age 19, men became citizens.

11 Law Each person presented his own case. Jury trials very large.
Case decided by simple majority. Athenians also had a court of appeals.

12 Economy Attic Peninsula is least fertile area in Greece
Great traders/ many colonies Raised goats for cheese and milk. Wine grapes for wine, olives for olive oil.

13 Education Develop minds in a healthy body
Reading, writing, grammar, poetry, music, gymnastics Sophists: sophos “wise” - opened schools for older boys Ethics – taught moral duty Rhetoric – public speaking and debating Greek became the second language for educated people throughout the Mediterranean
