1 Welcome Back! Which of the following most accurately describes how much land vs. how much water is on Earth? A) 50% Water 50% Land B) 90% Water 10% Land C) 70% Water 30% Land

2 Homework! Think about how much water you use everyday.
Finish worksheet from Friday, will be collected tomorrow.

3 Quickly and Quietly Take out Worksheet From Friday!
Let’s Catch up! Quickly and Quietly Take out Worksheet From Friday!

4 Real Amount of Land And Water Distribution
Real Distribution Percentages: 71 % - Water 29 % - Land

5 But How Is the 71% Water Broken Up?

6 Earths Total Water Supply:

13 Here’s a question for you…..
Why is the ocean salty?

14 Salinity and Density lab
EQ: How does salinity affect density in ocean water? Procedure: Place 500 mL of water in the beaker Gently place the egg in the water- does it sink or float? Why? Remove the egg. Add 2 heaping teaspoons of salt and stir until dissolved. Place the egg in again. Repeat until the egg floats. Clean up materials and place back in tubs

15 Lab Results Why did the egg float?
What was more dense: the salt water or the fresh water? Density: amount of mass in a given place

16 Ocean Composition Notes

17 Where is the most dense part of the ocean?
Density Where is the most dense part of the ocean? Why?

18 When water has more salt it sinks because it’s more dense.
Cold Deep Zone When water has more salt it sinks because it’s more dense.

19 The amount of salt dissolved in water
Salinity 1.What is salinity? The amount of salt dissolved in water

20 2. What type of salt is most abundant in the ocean?
Sodium chloride

21 3.Where will you find areas of low salinity?
Near the surface and near the mouths of rivers

22 Gasses! 1. Most of the oxygen in seawater comes from underwater plants. 2. Nitrogen

23 Temperature What happens to the temperature as water depth increases (you go deeper) in the ocean? Why? It gets colder because there is less light.

24 Pressure What happens to the water pressure as you go deeper
in the ocean? It increases because more water presses down on you.

25 Where are the oceans of the world located?
