2 Defining Family Sociologists define family as a group of people related by marriage, blood, or adoption. The Family we are born into is known as the family of orientation Marriage is defined as a legal union between a man and a woman based on mutual rights and obligation

3 The Two Main Family Types
Nuclear Family: The Smallest group of individuals that can be called family, parents and children Family Therapy Extended Family: two or more adult generations within the same family Grandparents, Children, Grandchildren, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins

4 Patterns of Family Who is in Authority?
Patriarchy: Oldest living man in the household has authority over the rest of the family Matriarchy: Oldest living female in the household has authority over all other family members Equalitarian: Authority is shared between husband and wife

5 Marriage Arrangements
Monogamy: Marriage of one man to one woman Polygamy: Marriage of one man to two or more women at the same time Polyandry: Marriage of one woman to two or more men at same time

6 Function of Family Socioemotional Maintenance: Provision of acceptance and support. Generally families are places where individuals are unconditionally loved and accepted.

7 Marriage in the US Marriage Rate: Number of marriages per year for every thousand members of the population Marriage rates have fallen 50% from 1940 Divorce Rate: number of divorces per year per one thousand members of the population Divorce Rate in US has been on a steady decline since 1981

8 Changes in Marriage and Family
Blended Families: A family formed when at least one of the partners in a marriage has been married before and has a child or children from a previous marriage Dual Employed Marriages: Marriages in which both spouses work outside the home Boomerang Kids: Adult children who return to living with their parents or home
