3 My Journal June 9, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Today I learned what are probably basic aspects of the movement through computers and their drives and various bells and whistles, if you will, but these are things I really didn’t know very well or needed refreshing. I am also somewhat intimidated by what we are supposed to do for this course. How I might use what I learned: I’ll be able to organize files in my computer and do housekeeping in my computer. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: I think it was presented well; however, I have to admit I did get lost at times. This was most likely due to the fact that technology is a weak area for me. Exit

4 My Journal June 10, 2003 Exit What I learned:
The text modification was mostly a review for me. Saving the document into txt was new, but not difficult. Everything dealing with powerpoint is definitely a learning experience, especially importing documents, pictures, and graphics. How I might use what I learned: I will be able to make powerpoint presentations more interesting by being able to insert pictures. Also, learning how to import documents into powerpoint will save time if I want those documents in my powerpoints. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Sometimes it’s too fast! Exit

5 My Journal June 11, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned how to actually create a powerpoint presentation by inserting pictures, graphs, and text. I also learned that virtually any of those things online can be copied and manipulated. The copy/paste was good practice. How I might use what I learned: I’ll be able to create powerpoint presentations, but I’ll also be able to copy/paste any of the things mentioned above on pretty much any document to make it more interesting. I’ll definitely be able to use powerpoints as a way to use visuals in my teaching. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: I like the variety of things we can import/insert into powerpoint! I think it would be helpful if there were some kind of handout that had the various steps of how to do this and that in writing. Exit

6 My Journal June 12, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned about various software, pedogogocal and non-pedagogical, that can be used in the classroom. I also learned about Dasher. How I might use what I learned: The software can be used to perform most any language domain, from listening/speaking to reading/writing and grammar and comprehension as well. I’m piloting a kindergarten French program where I focus on oral language only, so I have yet to find software that would work with that age group. Too bad they don’t make Dasher anymore; there’s probably something I could do with that. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: A list of recommended software and a short annotation of what each is about would be great. Exit

7 My Journal June 13, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Today I learned how to find sound files and insert them into powerpoint. I also learned how to record my voice and save it into my powerpoint. Very cool. How I might use what I learned: Again, I can make my powerpoints much more interesting by using sound. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Again, some kind of troubleshooting/how-to guide in the likely event we run into problems. Exit

8 My Journal June 16, 2003 Exit What I learned:
We had a guest who discussed creating websites. I can’t say that I really learned how to do create a website, but now I at least have some sort of schema. How I might use what I learned: I probably know enough to begin to simply play around with creating a website. At this point, though, copying and pasting and then editing someone else’s would be a good place to start. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

9 My Journal June 17, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned the basics of how to create a Dasher exercise. How I might use what I learned: Dasher seems to be a good way to design a lesson, via technology, that I can tailor-make to my needs. Considering that there are not many materials available for elementary French, Dasher seems to be a good option. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Written step-by-step directions! Exit

10 My Journal June 18, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned more about powerpoint (animation, sounds in animation, transitions, background color) by looking at my classmates’ presentations. How I might use what I learned: I can fine tune my powerpoint presentations and make them more interesting and aesthetically pleasing. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: I really enjoyed looking at all the presentations! Exit

11 My Journal June 19, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I saw scanning for the first time, but I would certainly need more practice to be able to do it. I also learned about hyperlinking slides and websites to pictures. How I might use what I learned: Hyperlinking slides will allow me to guide students as to where I want them to go. It will allow me to manipulate the powerpoint so it can be more interactive. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: So much of this is new to me and I get lost! Exit

12 My Journal June 20, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned more about inserting sound waves into powerpoints. How I might use what I learned: I can use my voice in presentations. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

13 My Journal June 23, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned how to create my own interactive powerpoint with interactive hyperlinks. How I might use what I learned: What I created was pretty basic, and I know enough to be able to revamp it, but learning how to make a presentation that flows and has active links was a big step for me. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: I like being able to work on tasks during class time. Exit

14 My Journal June 24, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I got behind on the Excel, so I definitely need to go through that again. On working on my revised mini project I learned more about powerpoint: how to copy slides into a new presentation, changing slide order, timing the effects. How I might use what I learned: Learning more and more about powerpoints is great. I will definitely be able to use them as a way to implement technology into teaching. I will be able to have computer lab sessions in which the students can use powerpoints as learning activities. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: The excel session was too fast! Exit

15 My Journal June 25, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I learned a bit more about powerpoint in looking at the other projects, such as word art and linking. I need more practice with linking, though. How I might use what I learned: I’ll be able to refine my presentations. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

16 My Journal June 26, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Dasher and Excel became a little more clear to me, but I will definitely need to work with them more to really understand how they work. How I might use what I learned: I’m really looking forward to working with Dasher and curious to see how it works in its entirety. Now that I know how to put in a formula, Excel will be handy. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

17 My Journal June 27, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Alejandro told us about the Discovery School website where you can create quizzes and tests online. Susann had great ideas about using authentic materials in teaching vocabulary. How I might use what I learned: The Discovery website is a great tool for teachers, and I think students would like the format. I can definitely use Susann’s ideas, especially with younger learners. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: They both did a great job; I’m glad they were here! Exit

18 My Journal June 30, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Today I worked on my final project, and I was very proud of myself for being able to navigate correctly through powerpoint. How I might use what I learned: Learning how to use powerpoint, especially the ways you can tailor it to suit your specific needs, has opened a new pathway for me. I will definitely use ppt in teaching. Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

19 My Journal July 1, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Today I worked on my final project. It’s coming along nicely. How I might use what I learned: Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

20 My Journal July 2, 2003 Exit What I learned:
I continued work on my final project today. As I work on it, ppt is getting much easier to navigate. How I might use what I learned: Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Exit

21 My Journal July 3, 2003 Exit What I learned:
Work continues on my final project! How I might use what I learned: Critique: how might the lesson be better presented: Thank you for all the great resources, including useful websites and the CDs! Exit
