1 Welcome Class of 2020 Upcoming Freshman Parents

2 You and your child are about to take an exciting journey as you all navigate your way through four years at WOHS. All doors are open to those who are willing to work as a team with the same goal in mind. Our goal is to produce 21st century learners.

3 Poor Choices = Negative Outcomes
Poor Attendance Poor Study Habits Negative Peer Pressure Not Meeting Deadlines Employment Hours No Extra-curricular Activities Negative Outcomes… Low Grades = Low GPA Low GPA = Effecting College of Choice

4 Academic Classes Standard vs Honors: same curriculum; higher order thinking skills used in honors classes. AP level courses require an honor level as a prerequisite. For example, Honors Earth/Environmental must be taken before AP Earth/Environmental GPA Value Standard – 4 points Honors – 4.5 points AP- 5 points

6 Future Ready Core Graduation Course and Credit Checklist

7 Concentration Concentration - Four elective credits which must be in the same area of concentration from a CTE concentration or a subject base concentration. One of these credits must be a level II course. Students are placed in an Academy based on their concentration: Freshmen Academy – placed to help assist with transition to High School (All 9th grade students) Options after 9th grade year: Arts Academy – Band, Chorus, Strings, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts HAHSA Academy– (Human & Allied Health Science Academy)-Health Occupations, Lifetime Fitness, Sports Medicine, Sport Management Humanities Academy- Education & Training, Culinary Arts, International Studies, Journalism, Law/Government & Public Services, Business Administrative Services, Business Finance, Business Marketing Management Technology Academy-Agriculture & Natural Resources, Biological & Chemical Technology, Bioengineering & Mathematics, Construction, Engineering & Architecture Note: The Academy does not determine if the student graduates or not.

8 Selection Guide The Onslow County High School Course Selection Guide is a comprehensive document profiling the individual programs and courses of study at all seven of Onslow County’s high schools. It is an effort to provide students, parents, and school professionals with an instrument to assist students in the selection of courses for grades 9 through 12. Select only classes that are available at WOHS. The “Selection Guide” is available online at Onslow County website.

14 What Math should I take? Foundations of Math I and Math I
Strengthens students math skills year long 2 classes: Fall – Foundations of Math I; Spring – Math I Math I Honors Students that achieved a Level IV or V on their End of Grade Exam Math II or Math III Students that completed Math I or II in 8th Grade and achieved BELOW a Level IV on their End of Grade Exam Math II Honors or Math III Honors Students that completed Math I or II in 8th Grade and achieved a Level IV or V on their End of Grade Exam

20 Student Services Department
Student Services has an open-door policy. Student may request to speak to their school counselor at any time with permission from their teacher. Counselors are also available daily in the “Counselor’s Corner” during student’s lunch time. “Counselor’s Corner” is located on the stage in the cafeteria.

21 Plan your child’s 9th grade year by completing the Registration Form and returning to your child's Homeroom teacher by April 11th.
