2 WHAT IS HOUSE BILL 5? Students first entering 9 th grade 2014-2015 and beyond Creates a personalized graduation plan aligned with student’s interests and goals. Endorsements PGPs Reduces the number of EOC exams from 15 to 5. English I English II Algebra I Biology US History

4 WHAT CREDITS ARE REQUIRED? English – 4 credits English I, II, and III, with an additional advanced English Mathematics – 3 credits Algebra 1, Geometry, and an advanced math Science – 3 credits Biology, IPC/Chemistry/Physics, and an advanced science course Social Studies – 3 credits World History/World Geography, US History,.5 Government,.5 Economics LOTE – 2 credits Must be from the same language Fine Arts – 1 credit PE – 1 credit Required Electives – 1 credit.5 Health.5 Professional Communications Other Electives – 4 credits Endorsement – 4 credits Students are expected to earn an endorsement in one of 5 areas To include an advanced math and an advanced science

5 WHAT IS AN ENDORSEMENT? A focused study in one or more areas of student interest. An endorsement must be declared in the 9 th grade The endorsement may be changed Any change must be completed in writing and signed by a parent.

7 CONSIDERATIONS College/University admissions requirements. Which science and math courses are required for admission and/or for a chosen major in college? Technology or Certification desired. Which courses will prepare students for career choices, both core subjects and electives? Will students be able to complete all of the foundation credits with endorsement requirements?

8 ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Distinguished Achievement DLA may be earned by completing the Foundation credits along with the requirements of one endorsement, in addition to: Algebra II, and 4 th Science Credit Performance Acknowledgment AP test score of 3 or above; Qualifying PSAT score based on the 11th grade test; SAT combined critical reading and math score of 1250 or above; ACT composite score of 28 or above; College course with a final grade of A or B (3.0 or above); Bilingualism and biliteracy; and Earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification or license

12 COLLEGE DAY OF TESTING On October 15 th, LRHS counselors will facilitate activities to inform students of the new graduation plan and provide guidance to assist them in deciding on an endorsement. Our goal is to ensure that every freshmen ends the day with an understanding of the graduation requirements and their options to personalize their graduation plan.
