1 What is energy? What can it be used for?
Science Starter What is energy? What can it be used for?

2 Energy is all around you!
Nature of Energy Energy is all around you! You can hear energy as sound. You can see energy as light. And you can feel it as wind.

3 You use energy when you:
Nature of Energy You use energy when you: hit a softball. lift your book bag. compress a spring.

4 Living organisms need energy for growth and movement.
Nature of Energy Living organisms need energy for growth and movement.

5 Energy is involved when:
Nature of Energy Energy is involved when: a bird flies. a bomb explodes. rain falls from the sky. electricity flows in a wire.

6 Energy can be defined as the ability to do work.
Nature of Energy Energy can be defined as the ability to do work. If an object or organism does work, the object or organism is using energy.

7 Nature of Energy Because of the direct connection between energy and work, energy is measured in the same unit as work.

8 The five main forms of energy are:
Heat Chemical Electromagnetic Nuclear Mechanical

9 While viewing the video, write down all the types of waves you hear
TYPES OF ENERGY While viewing the video, write down all the types of waves you hear NOTE: all of these types of energy are forms of electromagnetic waves Video Link

10 ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
Electromagnetic Waves – waves that can travel without a medium If these waves can travel without a medium, then they can travel through… EMPTY SPACE!

11 These waves travel very fast… about 670 million mph!
TRAVELING WAVES These waves travel very fast… about 670 million mph! This means they could go around the world 8 times in just 1 second!

12 ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of waves placed in order of increasing frequency

13 WAVELENGTH Radio waves are longest, but get shorter and shorter until they are gamma rays

14 Used in: GPS, radio waves, MRI
Have the longest wavelengths and lowest frequencies of all the electromagnetic waves. Used in: GPS, radio waves, MRI GPS, radio waves, MRI,

15 Used in: microwaves, radar
Have the shortest wavelengths and the highest frequency of the radio waves. Used in: microwaves, radar Microwaves, radar

16 Shorter wavelength and higher frequency than microwaves.
INFRARED RAYS Infrared= below red Shorter wavelength and higher frequency than microwaves.

17 Shorter wavelength and higher frequency than infrared rays.
VISIBLE LIGHT Shorter wavelength and higher frequency than infrared rays. Electromagnetic waves we can see. Longest wavelength= red light Shortest wavelength= violet (purple) light

18 These types of energy are produced by the sun!
Some are filtered out by the atmosphere so they do not harm us

19 These carry more energy than visible light
UV RAYS These carry more energy than visible light Used to kill bacteria Too much can cause skin cancer Helps skin produce vitamin D Good for teeth and bones

20 THANK GOODNESS! X-RAYS Carry more energy than UV rays
Can penetrate most matter Absorbed by bones and teeth Too much can cause cancer Filtered out by the sun!! THANK GOODNESS!

21 Exploding nuclear weapons emit gamma rays.

22 Electromagnetic Spectrum— name for the range of electromagnetic waves when placed in order of increasing frequency

23 GAMMA RAYS ULTRAVIOLET RAYS RADIO WAVES INFRARED RAYS X-RAYS MICROWAVES VISIBLE LIGHT

24 Create a Spectrum!
