1

2 Factors affecting Solubility (cont’d)
2. Temperature Solubility of solids increases in solution as temperature increases If a saturated solution is cooled, it becomes supersaturated and a crystal may form If a saturated solution is heated it becomes undersaturated and more solute can be dissolved Solubility of gases decreases in solutions as temperature increases As temperature increases you will see bubbles rising to the surface – this is the gas escaping from the solution

3 3. Pressure Does not affect solids and liquids solubility An increase in pressure increases the solubility of a gas in a liquid Ex. This is why pop ‘fizzes’ when you open it, the CO2 was put into the pop under high pressure conditions – opening it reduces the pressure and this means not as much CO2 can be dissolved in the pop anymore so it dissolves out and “fizzes” Ex. This is also part of the reason scuba divers get the ‘bends’ we will explore this more in the next unit.

4 Factors that Affect Rate of Dissolving
Agitation / Mixing (increases rate) Temperature (increased temp increases rate of dissolving) Surface Area (increased surface area increases rate of dissolving)

5 Questions 1 – 7 from McGraw-Hill pg. 316-319
