The Water Cycle All the water on the planet is recycled in this way!

Evaporation From Liquid to Gas. Gains energy (heats up) from the sun.
Occurs when liquid water from the Earth’s surface and from living organisms changes into water vapor (a gas).

Transpiration Water within plants evaporates into the atmosphere. Water is first absorbed by the plant’s roots, then later exits by evaporating through pores of the plant.

Condensation From Gas to Liquid
When water vapor (a gas) in the air cools and changes into liquid water droplets that form clouds in the atmosphere. Clouds are liquid!

Solid Particulates Solid particles in the air that the water condenses onto, such as smog and dust.

Precipitation Water, in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls from clouds onto the Earth’s surface because the water droplets in the cloud became too heavy to stay up.

Runoff Water that flows across land and collects in rivers, streams, and eventually the ocean.

Infiltration The movement of rain, snowmelt or other water that flows in underground streams, drains, or sewers due to the pull of gravity.

Percolation The downward movement of water through pores and other spaces in soil due to gravity.

Properties of Water Solid Liquid Gas

Cohesion – Water is attracted to other water molecules

Adhesion – Water is attracted to other materials.

Surface Tension – The Cohesion of water molecules at the surface of the water.

= Water 2 Hydrogen atoms & 1 Oxygen atom
