Water H 2 O = 2 hydrogen atoms + 1 oxygen atom Forms of water: –Liquid –Solid (ice) –Gas (in the air)

Water Cycle Water on the Earth is constantly in moving. Water on the Earth gets recycled over and over again. The movement and recycling of water on Earth is called the water cycle. The water cycle is also known as the hydrologic cycle. Hydro = water

Water reservoirs & processes A place where water is found or stored on Earth is called a reservoir. The cycling of water among places or reservoirs are called physical processes that move water.

Examples of Earth’s water reservoirs: lakes, rivers, streams and ponds.

Examples of an Earth’s water reservoirs: oceans

Example of an Earth’s water reservoir: glaciers and polar ice caps store frozen water

Example of an Earth’s water reservoir: an aquifer is water stored underground.

Example of an Earth’s water reservoir: the atmosphere stores water vapor.

A process that moves water on Earth: precipitation Rain, snow, sleet and hail.

A process that moves water on Earth: condensation Water vapor (gas) is converted to liquid. Condensation forms clouds.

A process that moves water on Earth: evaporation When liquid water is heated it will enter ther air (atmosphere).

A process that moves water on Earth: transpiration Water is taken up by plant roots and travels to leaves where it will evaporate.

A process that moves water on Earth: melting of glaciers, ice and snow

A process that moves water on Earth: stream flow

A process that moves water on Earth: infiltration. Water moves into the surface of the land and soil.

A process that moves water on Earth: run-off Water moves over the surface of land.
