2 Revision Steps

3 First 5 steps of revision
1. Do I have an opening sentence(s) that hooks the reader? 2. Is my piece focused? Does it stick to the topic throughout the piece? 3. Is my piece clear? Does it say what I want it to say? Do my sentences and ideas make sense? Flow? 4. Have I completely answered all the questions asked in the prompt? Refer back to prompt to check. 5. Have I included details, explanation, and elaboration of my ideas?

4 Last 5 steps of revision 6. Do I have a closing sentence(s)? Does it close and tie up the piece? 7. Do my sentences show rather than tell? 8. Do I have a varied word choice? 9. Do I have a varied sentence structure (questions, exclamations, dialogue, one word sentences, variety of length)? 10. Do I have transition words?

5 Editing

6 Capitalization beginning of sentences
proper nouns (names, months, places…) important words in a title I

7 Punctuation • end marks for every sentence • quotation marks around dialogue • commas in a series • commas with quotations

8 Spelling • circle words unsure of • check other words using spelling personal dictionary • check for homophones

9 Miscellaneous • complete sentences
• fix, delete, change repetitious words • eliminate unnecessary words • vary sentence structure • break up run-on sentences • combine short sentences • make new paragraph to begin piece, change in speaker, time, setting, topic or action
