2 Imperialism Imperialism- Stronger nations attempt to create empires by dominating weaker nations (Taking land and wealth, money) Social Darwinism-belief in European racial superiority and duty to spread western civilization

3 Imperialism Reasons for imperialism
Economic needs such as natural resources, new markets Political/military- national security/ naval bases nationalism- competition among nations, want prestige

4 Types of imperialism Direct rule- (French) French rulers, french customs Indirect rule- (British) local rulers, young get education in Britain Protectorate- local rulers, expected to follow advisors Sphere of influence- outside power (business company) trading priveleges

5 Scramble for Africa Early missionaries build schools, medical clinics teach Western culture Stanley & Livingstone- famous explorers of Africa, against slave trade. Written accounts increased interest of Africa. Shaka Zulu- Warrior King and military tactician who saw early success against Europeans (using hand to hand combat and encirclement)

7 Europeans in Africa King Leopold II of Belgium- forms and controls Congo free state, makes millions Congo people forced to work for low pay collecting rubber and were beaten, and mutilated. Estimated 10 million of Congolese died. Suez Canal- increase trade, shorten travel time
