SYNOPSIS The organization has managed to organize women in media, women in gender development work. Together with other media organizations, we have managed to change lives of women particularly at grassroots level. We have also managed to influence the government to make changes on various policies and laws e.g. SOSPA. The organization has call for changes for issues affecting women to be dealt worked on by the government and we are still working on it. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

OBJECTIVES To eliminate cultural barriers that hinder Masaai women participation in the development process, To promote participation of Masaai women in the general election, To promote public awareness on the SADC protocol 50/50 goal To link the rural women groups with national groups such as TAMWA, IAWRT, 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

BACKGROUND Women and girls were been discriminated by cultural practices, were not allowed to listen to the radio. Only men and boys were allowed. Women did not even know who was contesting for leadership such as Member of Parliament. They were not aware that women, including the young ones such as Halima Mdee can contest for MP, In general they were cut off from what was happening in the country and even in their area. KEY ACTIVITIES Establish facts through studies and survey Production of radio and television articles about the problems facing women as well as advancement made by women e.g. when Dr. Asha Rose Migiro was appointed to become the Secretary General of the United Nations Sensitizing community, organization members, other organizations, media staff in general on gender mainstreaming Networking (rural women groups, national women groups, international groups) Voice for the voiceless - Lobbying and advocacy for women voice to be raised  Please list at least five in bullet form 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

CHALLENGES Difficult to make men accept changes, it was overcome through sensitization Access to Maasai land – overcome by staying there for long time Language – overcome through forming groups and making many interventions through the groups where community members can discuss and agree on issues even by using Maasai language 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

What lessons have been learnt? One needs to have sufficient data in order to start the process for making changes of a situation Politicians have high influence in making changes Support and collaboration by other organizations and groups is important Multidisciplinary team helps fastening the processes How are these being applied?
