3 To make your student a stronger reader across all academic classes
My Goals To make your student a stronger reader across all academic classes To give your student the academic and social skills you need to progress to 8th Grade and High School. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help your student discover new interests and develop them.

4 Reading With the new textbook adoption, the themes are aligned with the curriculum in language arts classes. In our class we will: Work with reading skills the 1st 9 Weeks  Read novels Writing is still a major part of the class, however we will focus on shorter writing assignments

5 Reading Breakdown 1st 9 Weeks – Skills Review Novel Study
Plot Development Literary Elements

6 Themes Unit 1- The Choices We Make Unit 2- What Influences My Choices
Unit 3- Choice and Consequences Unit 4- How We Choose To Act

7 Reading: Novel Studies
We will be completing 2-4 Novel Studies in class this year We will read various types of literary texts that align with the language arts curriculum. Our possible chosen texts include topics related to the theme. Actual novels used in class will be announced in plenty of time to get a copy if needed/wanted. Our first novel that we will be reading is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. If you would like to have your own copy, please have it by October 15, 2018.

8 Grades: Synergy Grades are in a constant state of flux.
Please don’t be alarmed if your student’s grade drops one day and improves the next. Each time an assignment is added things change. If there is one item in a category, the grade isn’t going to be a true reflection. As we do more assignments, the grades will give you a more accurate picture. Look at each category for a true understanding of progress. The grades are in two categories: summative (60%) and formative (40%).

9 Synergy and Student Accountability
Grades are updated weekly Check with your student regularly. Ask child about missing assignments. Have student check binder for missing work. Students should check the folder on my bulletin board for any missed hard copies of work.

10 For Class: Students must come prepared with their composition notebok, folder or binder, and something to write with.  Students also need an independent reading novel.

12 TESTING REVISIONS Effective 2nd Quarter
·       Students are required to complete remediation tasks in order  to earn an opportunity to take a re-test regardless of their performance. (I.E study guides).  Effective 3rd Quarter ·       7th Grade: Students will be allowed to choose 1 summative to re-test per quarter. Reasoning: Data has reflected very minimal, if any improvement in score when students are not required to complete the supplementary work prior to the original test. Although they still have to complete remediation assignments after the original test in order to re- test, it's a much smaller window for preparation. In addition, we are meticulous in our opportunities to prepare and  support our students vertically for high school.
