Rocky soil = poor farming jagged coast and many natural harbors Many rivers & canals Harsh Winters!

3 The South Rich fertile soil Flat Excellent climate - mild, sunny
Hot Summers!

4 The North: Industrial economy
Factories - textiles Shipping Trade Mining Railroads Corn & Wheat grown in West Fishing (Whaling) Timber Circulation of Money

5 The South: Agricultural economy
Farming / Cotton Gin Cotton, corn, wheat, rice, tobacco. Some Railroads Heavy trade with Europe, especially England

6 Society, Population, & Labor in the North
Crowded cities 22 million people in the North (out of 32 million in the U.S.) Many immigrants travel to Northern cities due to job variety & free labor ( this means you choose your work & get paid for your services)

7 Society, Population, Labor in the South
Plantations & Farms What was life like? Did you have neighbors? 9 million people out of 31 million lived in the South. (3.5 million slaves) Slaves labor - slaves were purchased and were considered property.

Abolish slavery Strong federal government High tariffs on imported goods from the South.

Slavery was necessary Strong state governments Low or no tariffs due to heavy trade with Europe

10 What is Sectionalism? Loyalty to local interests.
