The translated song of del la ray
On a mountain in the night we lie in the darkness and wait In the mud and blood, I lie cold, grain bag and rain cling to me. And my house and my farm burned to ashes so that they could catch us But those flames and that fire burn now deep, deep within me. De la Rey, De la Rey, will you come to lead the Boers? De la Rey, De la Rey General, General, united we'll fall in around you General De la Rey Over the Khakis (Brits) that laugh -- [just] a handful of us against their great forces -- With the cliffs to our backs, they think it's all over [for us] But the heart of the Boer lies deeper and wider, that they'll still find [out] On a horse he comes, the Lion of the West Transvaal De la Rey, De la Rey, will you come to lead the Boers? De la Rey, De la Rey General, General, united we'll fall in around you General De la Rey Because my wife and my child, lie in a Hell-camp* and perish And the Khakis' blood[marrow of life] ** is poured over a nation that will rise up again De la Rey, De la Rey, will you come to lead the Boers? De la Rey, De la Rey General, General, united we'll fall in around you General De la Rey De la Rey, De la Rey, will you come for the Boers The translated song of del la ray

Common Themes in Traditional Irish Music
Caoineadh Songs: Caoineadh songs contain lyrics related to emigration due to to political or financial reasons. Alternatively, lyrics can be based around sorrow for a lost loved one. In more recent times, many Caoineadh songs contain themes relating to the Troubles in the north. ( For those who don’t know, the ‘Troubles’ in Ireland were a time of political tension between Catholic and Protestants in Northern Ireland which is under British rule. Some wanted to stay under Britain’s rule, some wanted the north and the republic to be united. The Troubles lasted about 30 years )

Revival of Traditional Irish
Irish music went through two revivals. One during the 1990’s and into the early 1920’s and 30’s. The second revival happened in the 60’s and the 70’s. The first revival: The Gaelic League founded in 1893, sought to promote the irish language through traditional irish arts. Their annual competition, Feis Ceoil encouraged native musicians and composers. The second revival: a loose movement of musicians founded in 1951 sought to preserve traditional music. Many innovative irish musicians emerged from this movement and inspired many future musicians such as Christy Moore, The Dubliners and Van Morrison in later years.

Celtic Rock Just as the name suggests, Celtic rock fuses the traditional irish music with rock music. It’s seen as a key foundation for the development of highly successful mainstream celtic bands and soloists, as well as creating derivatives for further fusions. One of the most, if not the most, performer to rise from the scene was Thin Lizzy. Formed in 1969 their first two albums were influenced by classic celtic music and their first hit ‘’Whiskey in a Jar’’ in 1972, was a rock version of the original song by ‘’The Dubliners.’’

Irish music and ‘The Troubles’

Sunday Bloody Sunday On January 30th, 1972, British soldiers shot 28 catholic civilians during a peaceful protest against internment. The events are captured in the song ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ by U2. The song was released on the 1983 album ‘War’. U2 were one of the most socially conscious groups of the 80’s. ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ is marked as the most political song the band has ever recorded.
16
Invisible Sun Sting, the lead singer of the 80’s band ‘The Police’ said during an interview with ‘Revolver’ magazine in 2000 that he wrote ‘Invisible Sun’ during the time he lived in Ireland during the time of the Belfast hunger strikes in which ten prisoners, including Bobby Sands, starved themselves to death. The idea of the invisible sun was supposed to give hope to the Irish people.

Zombie This song was released in 1994, four years before the Good Friday Agreement by The Cranberries. The song is written in response to the IRA bombings in Warrington, Cheshire in 1993 which killed 3 children.
